Welcome to the Sandle Family blog!

A conversation with Rick and Rachel (Sandle!) the day after the First Sandle Reunion generated the idea of creating a Sandle Family web site or blog. It's been a long journey from there...but at last it is ready (enough) for launch.

The reunion was a great day of connecting all the parts of the expanded, and growing, Sandle family and this blog is intended to provide a continuing connection. I have started with some comments and pieces from the First Reunion including the original invitation from Mary Pat, a list of attendees, some commentary.

My hope is that everyone will continue contributing to this blog with comments and conversation of events from the reunion as well as news and updates of interest to the family. Anyone can contribute anything - and I hope you will! Please let me know if there are others that need an invitation to become "contributors". You will notice that I already have some questions and information blanks...

Having known George and Mary Sandle, I'm sure they would be so proud to see how their family has grown yet maintained connections.

I look forward to hearing from each of you!

First Sandle Reunion (June 21, 2008)

The first Sandle Reunion was held June 21, 2008 at Sparrow Pond Campground and Recreation Center in Waterford, PA. Although the day began with cloudy skies and rain, as the family gathered, the sun came out. It was a tremendous turnout considering the attendees - now three generations of family members - came from far and wide around the United States (representing 11 of the 50 states).

Mary Pat Horvath must be highly commended for organizing such a fabulous gathering. The catered food arrived on time and was delicious although Otto's fish fry was the longest line of the day. There is nothing quite like Lake Erie perch in Otto's "secret batter".

A fabulous two-tone cake (chocolate/vanilla) rounded off the meal.

What a surprise to find several musical types in the family and entertainment ran the gamut.

There was our own Mick Jagger/Bob Dylan (Eric Long) ...

and our own John Lennon/Neil Young (Loren Fryxell)...

Later we were treated to true Irish originals by a couple of Irish Rovers themselves (John and Stephen McGinnis). If only they could have gotten the crowd more into it....

Rachel Sandle did a beautiful job with the family portraits and a wide selection of candid photos. How she wrangled each family and sub-family and then managed such excellent photos we will never know. It's a gift I tell you! And all under threat of a big incoming storm which eventually blew us all to our cars with rushed farewells.

Some of the "youngers" had cabins at the campground for the night. And I'm afraid that story has yet to be told. Suffice to say there are some telling photos of the night that will hopefully be shared by one of them.

Reuniting with family is always special. Our hope is that this page will open up new ways of staying connected and sharing memories.

Original Reunion Invitation

Original Reunion Invitation from Mary Pat Horvath

2/10/08

Dear Family,

It is official! The Sandle Clan and offspring will have a reunion in Erie, PA on Saturday, June 21, 2008. The reunion could start as early as 11am and go until 9pm. I’ll send updates as we get closer. The event will be held at the Sparrow Pond Campground and Recreation Center. This is a wonderful outdoor facility and we have access to all of the activities, except for the pool. That is only available to registered campers. It is in Waterford, PA, a short distance from the Peach St. Mall. It would be wise to book rooms now if you need them, as they fill up quickly during the summer. Also, for those who would like to camp at Sparrow Pond, they are presently taking reservations. Their website is www.sparrowpond.com and the phone number is 814 796-6777.

The food will be catered by Twins Restaurant. I t will include Broasted Chicken, ox roast and several sides. This will cost $10.00 per person for everyone over 10 years old. The only items you will need to bring are drinks/cups and snacks. If anyone is on a special diet or doesn’t eat meat, let me know and I will try to accommodate with the vegetable choices. All picnic supplies will be provided. Also, Otto mentioned that he might do a perch fry. We will encourage him.

The cost for the pavilion is $200.00 for the day. I have already paid for this and divided the cost among the 5 families, based on the # of adults in each immediate family. Each family can decide how they want to divide the cost. Please send a check to me (preferably one from each family) at 1831 Woodfill Way, Louisville, KY, 40205

Kraft (11) $68.75 ( I took care of this and will collect later)

Sandle (8) $50.00

McGinnis (6) $37.50

Stryker/ (4) $25.00
McBride

Lavengood (3) $18.75

I know that not all family members will be able to attend, but I think we need to share the cost in this way and for our future events.

I’m very excited about this and hope that most of you will be able to attend. I need to have a number for the food and payment by May 1st . I’ll send a reminder in April.

Love,
Mary
